Description

288, 290, and 292 Portobello High Street in Edinburgh is a two-storey, five-bay building from the later 19th century, with some alterations. It is the end building of a terrace and features shop space on the ground floor. The first floor is finished in droved ashlar, while the chamfered corner bay has polished ashlar, and the rear is constructed from rubble. There is a band course between the ground and first floors, along with a cill course, cornice, and blocking course.

On the southwest elevation facing Portobello High Street, there are windows in each bay on the first floor. The central entrance has a basket-arched door leading to a vestibule that provides access to the first-floor accommodation of No 290, topped by a rectangular plate glass fanlight. The flanking bays also feature basket-arched windows. There is a door in the chamfered corner bay on the outer left side at ground level for shop access, and another basket-arched door in the outer right bay, which has a later glazed door for No 292.

The northwest elevation facing Bellfield Lane is irregular with four bays. It includes a door on the inner right and a blinded window on the first floor in the outer right bay.

The building has a variety of windows, including four-pane, six-pane, and plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a two-pane skylight on the outer right. There is an ashlar wallhead stack between the centre and inner left bays on the southwest elevation, with mutual stacks that are rendered and coped on the southeast side, and ashlar and coped on the northeast side.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1994.
