Description
Crinan, located at the Crinan Canal Basin, is an early 19th-century building that originally served as a post office and store, and is now functioning as a coffee shop and gallery. The structure features a rectangular plan, is two stories high, and has three bays. It is constructed of harled rubble with raised margins and has a steeply pitched piended roof, which is adorned with four tall, narrow, buttressed chimney stacks positioned near each corner.
The east elevation, which faces the canal, has a central two-leaf door, along with an additional door leading to a large two-story lean-to addition on the left side. There is also a flat-roofed addition at the far left. The upper floor contains self-contained accommodation for the post-master or loch keeper, known as Harbour House, which is accessed from the higher ground at the rear.
The ground floor features multi-pane timber glazing, while the first floor has timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, including the lean-to addition.
Inside, as observed in 2013, the building has undergone alterations in the late 20th century to accommodate the coffee shop and gallery. The ground floor areas display exposed rubble walls, with an arched recess located on the rear wall.
