Description
Ness House, located in South Ness, South Walls on Hoy, dates from the mid to late 18th century and features later additions. It is a two-storey, five-bay house with a later single-storey, three-bay crowstepped addition that was formerly a post office. The exterior is constructed of rubble and is clad in lime-based wet harl.
The northeast elevation, which is the principal facade, is symmetrical with three bays on the left. It has a central gabled porch with a window, and a door is set into the right return. There are windows flanking the porch on both sides, and two first-floor windows are centered above. To the right, there are two ground-floor and two first-floor windows. The three-bay addition features a central door with a two-light fanlight and single windows on either side.
On the southeast elevation, there is a single first-floor window to the left. The southwest elevation includes a ground-floor window at the far right and a pitched dormer window that breaks the eaves, centered above. There is a door to the left, with a first-floor window centered above it. To the left of the door, there are two ground-floor windows. A two-bay section to the left has two ground-floor windows, one first-floor window, and one pitched dormer window that also breaks the eaves. The former post office has two windows.
The northwest elevation features a single-storey addition with a window to the right. The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the ground floor and 4-pane windows on the first floor, with the smaller first-floor windows hugging the eaves. There are stone ball finials on the porch and dormer gables, exposed keystones on the gable walls, and coped gablehead stacks for both the house and the crowstepped gable of the former post office. The house has a coped ridge stack and a stone (Caithness) slate roof, along with cast-iron skylights at the front and rear.
The interior was not seen in 2000.
