Description

The Ship Inn, located at North Ness on the island of Hoy, is likely an early 19th-century building that was formerly a public house. It features a rectangular plan with a two-storey main block that has three bays, along with a small single-storey section at the northern end. The design is symmetrical, with evenly spaced openings and crowstepped gables. The exterior is rendered and pebble-dashed, with concrete cills inserted into the windows. The western elevation shows older harl.

On the eastern elevation, which is the principal facade, there is a central entrance with a replacement panelled timber door, flanked by windows on both floors and an additional window above. The single-storey section to the right has an entrance with a replacement panelled timber door on the left and a window to the right.

The western elevation features a small near-central window on each floor of the main block. To the left, there is a small single-storey lean-to addition made of coursed rubble, which includes a window at the front and an entrance on the left side. The single-storey section to the left has a window on that side.

On the southern elevation, there is a window to the left of each floor in the gable end of the main block. The northern elevation has a blank gable end that projects from the single-storey section, while the main block's blank gable end is set back.

The building has replacement two-pane timber windows with top-hung upper casements. The main block has a stone slate roof, while the single-storey section has a concrete tile roof. There are gablehead stacks with concrete coping on either side of the main block and one on the single-storey section, with round cans.

The interior has not been inspected since 2000.
