1-5 America Street, Montrose

1-5 America Street in Montrose is a 19th century fish curing works that consists of a quadrangle featuring offices, workshops, stores, and a manager's house arranged around an enclosed central courtyard. Built between 1840 and 1860, this complex is prominently situated by the quayside at Montrose Harbour.

The street-facing side showcases simple classical details, including a pilastered door-piece leading to the office and a segmental arched entrance pend with timber doors that open into the courtyard. The courtyard's elevations include a stone forestair, timber hoist doors, and small windows positioned close to the eaves. The manager's house, located at the southwest corner, has a small garden area that faces the quay. The roofs of the buildings are slated.

The interiors have undergone significant refurbishment, but some features from the 19th century remain in the manager's house, such as fireplaces, moulded cornices, and timber panelled shutters.
