Description
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, built in 1870 by Alexander Ellis, is a small Gothic-style church located on Sandyhill Road in Banff. It is constructed of dark local whinstone with grey ashlar margins and dressings. The church features an entrance porch on the south elevation, a buttressed gable with paired lights facing the street, and a small three-stage spire, all fronted by a low chapel.
Inside, the church has a galleried interior that is oriented liturgically to the east and features a ribbed vaulted ceiling. There is a Gothic-style carved wooden reredos with a marble front and an advanced altar. The walls have a panelled dado topped with painted Stations of the Cross, each framed in wood. The seating consists of plain pews, and there is a small chapel at the east gable.
