Description
The Tollbooth Hotel, located at 53 Low Street in Banff, dates back to 1801 and likely incorporates some earlier elements. This three-storey building features a wide, three-bay façade that is harled with painted margins.
The ground floor is occupied by an early 20th-century shopfront that includes a long fascia board and delicate cast-iron mullions supporting shallow segmental-headed fretted overthrows. The hotel entrance is located in the return gable facing Strait Path.
On the first floor, there is a large blind Venetian window in the center flanked by two windows. The second floor has three windows that break the wallhead under piended gables, all featuring 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The building has coped end stacks, with the southern stack displaying an early 18th-century style moulded cope. The flat skews have run-off skewputts, and the roof is covered with slate.
At the rear, there is a two-storey, two-bay return gable (2,4 Strait Path) that includes a doorway and one small and one larger window on the first floor. There is also an entrance to a yard that leads to a small, irregular two-bay whitewashed rubble cottage, which was an old jail. This cottage has a center door and varied fenestration, including two very small first-floor lights and two blind windows, topped with a corrugated-iron roof.
