Description

The Douglas Hotel, located at 43-45 Market Street in Aberdeen, has its core dating back to 1848, with alterations and extensions made by James Souttar in the late 19th century. Further modifications were carried out by Marshall Mackenzie & Son in 1937, which included the addition of an upper storey and a new front façade. This four-storey hotel, situated on a sloping corner site, now predominantly exhibits an Art Deco style.

The exterior is constructed from grey granite ashlar and features a base course and band courses. The ground floor windows have moulded arrises, while the central entrance bay includes a canted, recessed door. Above the entrance, there is a recessed moulded copper panel that extends to the top storey, which is adorned with moulded balconies and metal-framed windows, topped by a tall wallhead parapet. The building also has later extensions at the rear and a moulded cyma recta detail at the corner.

The windows are primarily four-pane timber sash and case with horns on the upper storeys, while the ground floor features plate glass with timber glazing bars. Above the entrance, there are metal casement windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes wallhead and ridge stacks.

The interior of the hotel was comprehensively modernised in 2006.
