York Street Nursery School, Aberdeen

York Street Nursery School in Aberdeen, designed by Pirie & Clyne, was built in 1881 with an addition made to the rear in 1892. This single-storey, gabled former nursery school features a prominent two-stage square-plan bell tower at the center of the south elevation, which faces the street, topped with a pyramidal roof. The street-facing elevation is constructed of squared, coursed granite, while the other sides use Aberdeen-bond masonry. The building has a battered base course, some hoodmoulds, and simple stone finials at the apex of the gables. The south elevation includes tripartite pointed-arched window openings.

Most of the windows are now non-traditional uPVC lying-pane types. The roof is covered with grey slate, and the stone skews have simple gableted or blocked skewputts. The building features coped, shouldered ridge and wallhead stacks.

Inside, as observed in 2006, the interior has been predominantly altered, although some cornicing and skirting boards remain.

The boundary wall consists of a coped, coursed granite wall with simple ironwork railings, and there is a rubble and brick wall to the east.
