Description
80-82 St Clement Street in Aberdeen is an impressive symmetrical U-plan warehouse and tenement group built in the earlier 19th century. The central warehouse section, facing St Clement Street, is a four-storey structure with seven bays, constructed from grey granite ashlar. It features segmental headed openings, with the central bay recessed and adorned with a semi-elliptical arch, margined windows, and a replacement two-leaf boarded timber wide doorway at ground level. Above, there is a stepped wallhead pediment.
Flanking the warehouse are two tenement wings, each three storeys high and three bays wide, with rounded corner bays that extend into five-bay elevations to the east and west. The ground floors of these wings have arcaded shop fronts, a band course between the ground and first floors, and coped blocking courses. The wallhead chimney stacks are pedimented and located on the eastern, western, and southern elevations.
The upper levels of the tenement wings predominantly feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the warehouse's southern elevation displays a variety of panes in its timber sash and case windows. The ground floor shops have predominantly altered fixed-pane glazing. The building is topped with a grey slate roof and clay cans.
Inside, the warehouse section has been converted into flats, while some of the ground floor shops retain simple cornicing, as observed in 2006.
