Gates at 14 Sabbath Hill, Ballyveaghmore, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4UR

The gates at 14 Sabbath Hill, Ballyveaghmore, Kilkeel, Newry, are of interest primarily for their collection of traditional vernacular gates and their location near the farmhouse at 15 Sabbath Hill (listed at HB 16/02/042). These seven gates form part of a farm complex that has undergone considerable alteration.

Gate A consists of wrought iron carriage gates with dog finialled bars at the lower level, and wrought iron finial 'spear heads' on top of stone capped piers. Gate B is a similar wrought iron pedestrian gate, also on capped stone piers. Gate C is a flat iron field gate featuring alternate vertical members that join into an arched motif, with horizontal members closer to the ground to prevent livestock escape. A pedestrian gate of the same style is present as Gate D. Gate E replicates the design of Gate C. Gate F is a flat iron pedestrian gate with vertical dog bars at the lower level; the upper half features interlocking semi-circles to create two flower motifs. Gate G is similar in design to Gate C.

According to the current owner of 15 Sabbath Hill, the farmhouse was once a substantial dwelling, employing staff in the mid-19th century; this explains the presence of the large carriage gates and formal pedestrian entrance. The gates were likely constructed between 1840 and 1859.
