Gates at, Bayview House, 43 Benagh Road, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4LT

A set of three gates, dating from around 1800 to 1819, serve Bayview House and associated yards at 55 Benagh Road in Kilkeel. These gates are representative of features formerly common in the Ulster landscape, and it is unusual to find three in such close proximity.

A pair of gates, marked A), are set within circular rubble stone piers approximately 2 metres high. The piers are harled and whitewashed, topped with conical caps and rounded boulder finials. The gates themselves are modern pedestrian gates that provide access to the front garden.

Gates B) serve the rear yard, and are similarly arranged with piers about 2.5 metres high, harled and whitewashed with conical caps and rounded boulder finials. These gates are flat iron gates of a traditional design, incorporating dog bars on the lower half.

Gate C) provides access from the rear yard to a further area, again with piers approximately 2.5 metres high, of matching appearance. The gates here are a pair of flat iron gates with bars running the full height.

The site is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. The stone pillars are likely to date from the 19th century.
