Description

The gatelodge and gates form part of the Kinghill House demesne, located on the north side of Hilltown Road, near Rathfriland. This ruinous one-and-a-half-story, two-bay building appears to have been constructed between 1820 and 1839, likely in connection with renovations to Kinghill House itself. It was not depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map but is shown on the 1859 map.

The building is aligned northwest-southeast and features walls of uncoursed random rubble with lime render and a prominent red brick eaves course. The original natural slate roof, with overhanging gables, is largely lost. The front elevation, facing northeast, showcases the remains of a shallow gabled porch, constructed of red brick with lime render and granite kneestones. The porch once provided access to the right-hand bay of the gatelodge. There were originally single windows flanking the porch, both with stepped red brick surrounds and granite sills, although their window frames are now missing. The left gable, facing the road, shows the collapsed base of a canted bay window; only its granite cills, a single granite mullion, and evidence of a shallow canted lean-to roof remain within the render. A stucco roundel sits above the gable. The rear elevation has two openings, one a partially infilled window with a granite lintel and cill, and the other a narrow doorway. The right gable has an infilled opening at ground floor level and a small window opening in the gable at attic level.

A granite screen wall, concave at the road-facing side with a moulded rendered coping, fronts the property and incorporates four gate piers. Each pier has a chamfered base and an ashlar granite post featuring incised panels with a decorative frieze; they are topped with pyramidal copings. The central carriageway has no gates. Pedestrian gateways to the left and right retain wrought iron gates with dog bars and spearhead finials. A drive leads from the gates past the gatelodge towards Kinghill House. The building is currently derelict and remains in private ownership.
