Lock 5 and Former Lock House, Carnbane Newry Canal, Newry, Co. Down, BT35 6QB

This is a canal lock and lock keeper’s house situated on the Newry Canal. The lock chamber is approximately 60 feet long and constructed of coursed squared granite blocks, with rubble stone abutments. A modern concrete footbridge with galvanized metal railings crosses the lock. Adjacent to the lock is a derelict one-and-a-half-story, three-bay lock keeper’s house, flanked by single-story outbuildings which are also derelict. Further details regarding the lock house can be found in record HB16/21/070. The structure was surveyed initially but not listed, and a partial record only was taken during a subsequent survey as it was deemed not worthy of a full survey.
