Description

A one-and-a-half-storey former teacher's residence situated on Goragh Road, approximately 3 miles north-north-west of Newry, County Down. The house stands immediately west of Mullaghglass Primary School and immediately east of the ruins of Mullaghglass church and burial ground.

The building was constructed in 1907–8 as a detached teacher's residence for the adjacent school, replacing an earlier teacher's dwelling that had originally been attached to the schoolhouse. The neighbouring school was built around 1827 as a Kildare Place Society School. Following the gifting of the schoolhouse, teacher's residence and adjoining land to the Armagh Diocese Board of Education by Captain Roger Hall in 1907, the schoolhouse underwent thorough renovation and a new teacher's residence was commissioned. The National School Board sanctioned a loan of £250 for the new house, which was completed by 1908. At this time, the former teacher's residence was incorporated into the schoolhouse to provide an additional classroom.

The first resident was Francis Atkinson, recorded in the 1911 census as a 41-year-old Anglican teacher. He was followed by Joseph G J Burrows, principal from 1912 to 1915 and a former winner of the prestigious Carlisle and Blake prize. Joseph G Thornberry served as principal from 1916 until retirement in 1945, followed by Joseph Wray until 1975. Raymond Menoun was the last teacher to live in the residence, leaving around 1983. The house was subsequently occupied by school caretakers and has been vacant in recent years.

The front elevation faces south and is symmetrical, featuring a central doorway with replacement door beneath a pitched roofed open porch, a single window opening on each side at ground floor level, and two window openings within a pitched dormer at attic level. All windows are replacement uPVC double-glazing with painted stone cills. Rendered chimney stacks rise from each gable. The west gable has a single ground floor window; the east gable was not visible at survey. The rear elevation faces north and is abutted by a single-storey lean-to return on its left side.

The walls are finished in painted rough-cast, the roof is natural slate with metal rainwater goods. The house is set back from the road with a front garden and path leading to the door. Rubblestone walling with rounded concrete coping marks the south and west boundaries, with a small yard to the rear.

A historic photograph from around 1960 shows the house largely retaining its form and features as they appear today, though it is unclear whether the house originally featured additional decorative detailing. The windows and doors have been replaced in recent years, and the loss of historic fabric and original detailing is considered insufficient to meet the criteria for listing.
