Description
The Grove is a one-and-a-half storey, two-bay farmhouse built between 1800 and 1819. It is located in the townland of Moneydorragh More, near Annalong, County Down. The building is of local interest as it represents the last unaltered house within this small clachan settlement.
The house is constructed of whitewashed lime rendered granite rubble with advanced stone eaves, and has a pitched and coped roof covered in natural slates. Two rendered stone chimneys are present, one on the left gable and the other on the shared party wall with a neighbouring property – an unusual feature. Metal rainwater goods are missing. The façade has two brick dormers with pitched coped roofs, raised to create first-floor living space. Some of the render on the dormers has fallen away. A central porch with a pitched natural slate roof stands on the façade, sheltering a metal-sheeted door. Metal casement windows flank the door, with smaller windows in the dormers. The sills of the dormer windows are lower than their frames, suggesting they replaced larger timber originals. A metal window is also present on the first floor of the right gable. The left gable and rear wall are blank.
The farmhouse appears on an Ordnance Survey map dated 1834, and is named ‘The Grove’ on the 1859 edition of the map. It is not mentioned in the First Valuation book, and the Second Valuation Books do not provide any measurements, making it impossible to determine when, if ever, the building was raised from one to two floors. The building retains vernacular architectural characteristics, and alterations have enhanced its overall appeal.
