This is a group of houses designed in 1943 by T.F.O. Rippingham, an architect working for the Northern Ireland Office of Works. They were built as staff houses for workers at Ballylumford Power Station and are located in the townland of Ballycronan More, Islandmagee. The group consists of two pairs of semi-detached houses and one detached house. The houses were originally conceived as a cohesive group of some interest, but their architectural value has been significantly reduced by subsequent alterations. The houses are in a modern style, featuring monopitch concrete roofs, rustic brick construction for the semi-detached pairs, and a later rendered finish on the detached house. The detached house also has replacement windows with small panes of hardwood, not matching the original design. All the houses have been altered, with replacement windows or later front extensions. They stand in a rural setting, set back slightly from Ferris Bay Road, with lawns to the front and are easily visible from the road. Records relating to the design and construction are held in the Ministry of Finance files at H.M.B., Hill Street, Belfast.
