Description
This memorial, dating from between 1880 and 1899, is of national historic interest, although its relocation may have diminished its architectural significance. It consists of a cast iron lamp standard mounted on a battered concrete plinth, dedicated to commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 'gun running' of 1914. The lamp standard is ornamented with relief carvings of acanthus leaves and garlands. The lamp itself is non-functional and lacks a light source, and commemorative plaques are affixed to the plinth. The memorial stands on a grassy area along the shore of Larne Lough, directly accessible from the main road and near two other memorials.
The lamp was manufactured by James Allan Senior and Son, Elm Bank Foundry, Glasgow, as indicated by a plaque on its base. It was unveiled on 25th April 1964 by Right Honourable Terence O’Neill, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, to commemorate the arrival at Larne Harbour of the S.S. ‘Clyde Valley’, renamed ‘Mountjoy’, on 24th April 1914, carrying arms for the Ulster Volunteer Force, formed to defend Ulster’s union with Great Britain. The inscription plaque notes that the lamp served as the guiding light for the vessel as it entered port, and includes the initials "UVF. For God and Ulster." The memorial was originally situated on Olderfleet Road opposite the Olderfleet Hotel before being relocated to its current position.
