Curran Lodge, Coastguard Road, Larne, Co Antrim

Curran Lodge is an early Victorian house built between 1840 and 1859. It is a two-storey, gabled house of no particular architectural merit or recorded historical importance, having retained very little of its original external appearance. The house has a symmetrical three-bay front, with a gabled element extending to the rear on one side and a hipped return on the other. The roof is covered with asbestos slate, a replacement material. The walls are dry-dashed with pebbles, also a replacement, and the dressings are painted rendered. The central entrance is recessed within a rectangular surround, which has been altered from its original form. Most windows are modern replacements, being PVC frames with fixed lights and top-hung vents in a small-paned design, replacing original timber sliding sash windows with horns. The house is situated on its own grounds facing north, with a lawn and a concrete area in front, bounded by a partly rendered rubble stone boundary wall. An entrance gateway consists of square, dry-dashed piers topped with a modern steel gate. The house appears on an Ordnance Survey map dated 1857.
