Description

The Princess Victoria Memorial, located on Chaine Memorial Road, Larne, Co Antrim, is a modern memorial of local historic interest, built in 1980. While it possesses little architectural distinction, it effectively conveys a sombre atmosphere appropriate to its purpose.

The memorial is a stone monument of cubic form, constructed in a plain and unornamented modern style. It stands on a stepped and battered plinth, topped with a ship’s anchor embedded directly into its surface. The monument is built from finely jointed ashlar granite blocks, left unmoulded, and features a polished black marble surround at the top of the plinth. It is set within a concrete paved area enclosed by wrought iron chain-link railings, which hang from square piers set on paving slabs. The memorial is situated on a grassy area on the shore of Larne Lough, directly accessible from the main road and in close visual proximity to two other memorials.

The memorial was erected in memory of those who perished on the M.V. Princess Victoria, which sank off the coast of Northern Ireland on January 31, 1953, en route from Stranraer to Larne. The vessel foundered with the loss of 133 lives, 27 of whom were from Larne. The design is by Ronnie Blair, Amenities Officer for Larne Borough Council, with D. McCooke of Ballymena acting as contractor, who donated their labour costs for the materials. The total cost of the memorial was £3,000, funded by public subscription through a Council appeal. A bronze inscription plate was donated by Kane's Foundry, Larne, and the ship’s anchor by Larne Harbour Ltd. The memorial was completed in September 1980. The listing includes the memorial itself, along with its surrounding paving, railings, and supporting piers.
