Description
This is a late Victorian Orange Hall, built in 1901, situated at 24 Curran Road, Larne, County Antrim. The building's most notable feature is its entrance tower, which provides an ornamental element to the street scene. However, the overall appearance has been significantly altered by replacements of original materials.
The hall is a symmetrical three-bay, two-storey gabled structure, designed in an indeterminate style with Gothic Revival influences. A central projecting bay rises to an extra storey to form a tower, topped by ornamental wrought iron parapet railings. The roof is now covered with inappropriate concrete tiles. The walls are roughcast with painted stucco quoins and painted cement rendered dressings to the windows. Windows on the first floor of the entrance front have segmental heads and are replacements, consisting of timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. Ground floor windows on the entrance front are rectangular PVC windows with two horizontal divisions, also replacements. Gable windows on each end feature a mix of PVC replacements and original timber sliding sash windows, vertically hung, with a 1 over 1 pattern and horns. A Gothic arched entrance leads to double doors of six-panel timber construction, surmounted by a tympanum bearing an inscription. A flat, canopied open porch, a later addition, is also inappropriate. The tower includes a Gothic arched blind panel in the top storey and a Gothic corbel course to the tower cornice. A central flagpole tops the tower.
The building is situated on an elevated site, set back slightly from the main road and accessed by a flight of steps flanked by front garden areas that have been concreted over. A porch was added in the 1940s.
