Description

The Laharna Hotel was a large, five-storey building established around the 1890s and originally faced the Glenarm Road in Larne, County Antrim. It was severely damaged by fire in 1901 and subsequently reconstructed in 1903 to designs by Berkley D. Wise, who was the engineer to the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway. The reconstruction included the addition of a ballroom and a flat promenade roof. In the 1930s, a fifth storey with a pitched roof was added, along with a reinforced concrete porch to the front.

The building comprised a central block, nine windows wide, set back behind two five-storey wings angled on either side. The lower two storeys were faced with rough-faced sandstone in regular courses, with larger ashlar sandstone dressings; the upper storeys were rendered. The windows were timber sliding sash, vertically hung, with horns. Most windows were of a 1 over 1 sash design, except for those on the top floor which were originally 6 over 6, and those on the ground floor, which were combined with six-pane transom lights. An original recess in front of the central block was later filled with a flat-roofed, single-storey addition in white painted concrete, designed in an Art Deco style.

The hotel stood within the built-up area of the town, directly facing a main road. It was abutted on one side by a three-storey flat-roofed building, and on the other by a small, single-storey gabled red brick shed. The building was demolished on 18 June 2001.
