Description
This is an attractive gate lodge, likely dating from between 1900 and 1919, originally built in a ‘Domestic Revival’ style common at the turn of the 20th century. It may have been designed by Nicholas Fitzsimons of Larne, who also designed the Smiley Memorial Cottage Hospital nearby. The lodge is a single-story building with gables and an asymmetrical plan. It has wet dashed walls painted cream, with red brick base courses and half-timbering to the gables. The roof is slated, with a red brick chimney and a canted bay window. It occupies a detached position within Smiley Park, a public park, set back slightly from Victoria Road behind a hedge, and is surrounded by grassed areas and mature trees. The building’s current use is as an office and it is located within the curtilage of the scheduled monument ANT 40:35.
