Former Technical School, Victoria Road, Larne, Co Antrim

This is an Edwardian building dating from 1911, originally constructed as Larne Technical School. It was later used as Local Government Offices. The design is by James Heron of Hobart and Heron, of Belfast, and it is located in the Town Parks area of Larne, facing a main road and set back slightly, with a sloping site towards the rear. The building stands within the town’s built-up area, flanked by a terrace of houses and a public park.

The building is a symmetrical two-storey structure of red brick with red sandstone dressings, executed in a free treatment of Renaissance style. It features a central round-arched entrance of rusticated stone, above which is a stone balcony supported on curved stone brackets. Open triangular pediments top the projecting end bays, while a curving segmental open pediment crowns the central entrance bay. The windows are rectangular sliding sash windows, vertically hung with 8 over 8 panes, incorporating horns, and are fitted with top-hung four-pane vents. These windows are set within shallow segmental arches on the entrance front and most of the side elevations. While the exterior retains its original features and presents a dignified, unspoiled appearance, the interior has lost its original character.
