Post Office, 78 Main Street, Larne, Co Antrim, BT40 1RE

This is a post office situated on Main Street, Larne, constructed between 1920 and 1939. It is an example of an inter-war building designed in a Neo-Georgian style, attributable to the architects of the Northern Ireland Office of Works. The building is single-storey and constructed in rustic brick with a Portland stone plinth and string course. It features round-arched openings and slated hipped roofs. Some original glazing bars have been retained in the windows, although most have been removed. The post office stands directly onto the pavement, bordered to the left by a terrace of two-storey houses with shops and to the right by a post-Second World War, single-storey, flat-roofed extension that belongs to the building itself. Later alterations to the windows have diminished the building’s original appearance.
