Hamilton Fountain, Chaine Memorial Road, Larne, Co Antrim

The Hamilton Fountain is a late Victorian drinking fountain, likely dating from between 1880 and 1899. It exemplifies the ornate style typical of such structures and retains many of its original features. The fountain is constructed of cast iron and comprises a circular basin supported on four columns, set on a moulded base. The basin is enclosed by four brackets that rise to a cistern head. The cistern head is topped by two inscription plaques of cartouche shape, mounted back-to-back, and a ball and strapwork finial, all standing on a two-step concrete plinth. Four outlets lead from the cistern to the basin; two original spouts remain intact, one is missing, and one has been replaced with a modern chromium tap. The fountain is currently not functioning. It is prominently located in a public place on a concrete promenade at the corner of a road overlooking Larne Lough, at the edge of the town. The fountain was erected by Orangemen and other friends in memory of Alexander Hamilton of Larne, who died on 9th April 1891, a detail recorded on the inscription plaques. It was manufactured by the Sun Foundry, Glasgow. While the fountain demonstrates good architectural style and ornamentation, some alterations detract from its original appearance. The plaques are original features of the fountain.
