Description

The bandstand is a well-proportioned example of a building type commonly associated with the Victorian or Edwardian era and retains its original features. It was erected in 1938 by Larne Urban District Council, funded by a bequest from Robert Thomas Ross, a local businessman. The design is attributed to the town surveyor, J.A. Caskey MCBE, with W.H. Kane & Co. acting as contractors.

The bandstand is octagonal, consisting of eight circular cast iron columns topped with ornamental open-work cast iron spandrels. These support a copper ogee domical roof, surmounted by a square lantern with clockfaces and a lead ogee roof, culminating in a decorative finial. The copper roof has some disrepair to its cover strips. Cast iron guttering is present, with some replacement sections in PVC. The interior features a ceiling sheeted in eight sections of tongued and grooved timber, with a circular hole in the centre. The floor is composed of eight panels of concrete surrounding a central octagonal section. Ornamental wrought iron railings enclose seven sides at the base, with the eighth side partially closed around a fixed axial opening. The bandstand stands on a concrete base with three concrete steps leading up to the entrance facing west.

The bandstand is situated in a central position within a grassed area of an open public park, accessible via a curving tarmac path of informal layout. To the east, within the park, is a small single-storey pavilion of no particular architectural interest. To the west, around a corner, is the main park entrance, comprising four plain square stone gate piers, now lacking gates or railings, and displaying inscription plaques. The park itself was established in 1933, with its gateway presented as a memorial from the family of Sir Hugh Smiley of Drumalis. Inscription plaques are present on both the bandstand and the gateway.
