Description

These substantial lime kilns, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, represent a good example of a once-common rural industrial structure. They are currently in a derelict condition but retain impressive scale and are easily visible from a public pathway. The kilns were built of squared greystone in regular courses, featuring two kiln openings set within segmental arches formed of shaped voussoirs on their front face. The side walls project forward to create battered buttresses with stepped abutments at the base. Within each outer arch, two smaller recessed arches are visible—the kiln to the left exhibits cracks above its outermost arch, while the kiln to the right has some missing stonework at its first recessed arch. The sides of the structure are battered, with a crack visible in the left-hand side wall. A buttress on the left is abutted by a wall constructed of basalt rubble, partially harled and topped with basalt blocks as coping, which curves to meet the side boundary and the main road. Tubular metal railings, a 20th-century addition, run along the front and sides at parapet level, supplemented by timber slat fencing on the left. The top surfaces of the kilns are grassed over, divided by a central fence, with a small, fenced-off rectangular area marking the former access point, now filled in. The kilns are situated behind two houses, on a sloping site where the houses’ back lawns extend onto the top of the structure. They face a public path that connects to a promenade overlooking the sea. These kilns appear on an Ordnance Survey map of 1833 and are noted for their industrial archaeological interest and local historical significance.
