Description
Mullyduff is a two-storey house with attic and basement, aligned west to east in Mullyduff Townland, County Fermanagh. It comprises a three-bay principal block with an earlier building to its rear, now forming a rear return, aligned north to south.
The principal elevation faces north. It features a large projecting entrance porch, detailed as a house with a flat tarred roof and cast-iron balustrade. The porch has semicircular-headed margin-paned sliding sash windows to its north face and right cheek. A modern timber panelled door with sidelights and transom, accessed by six modern tiled steps, occupies the left cheek. The left and right bays each contain two windows. Five windows, diminished in height, are aligned above the ground floor openings. The left gable has small 1/1 sliding sashes at attic level on either side.
The main walls are cement-rendered with stepped stucco quoins over a slightly advanced base course. Windows throughout are 1/1 sliding sashes with horns and stone cills set in moulded stucco architraves. The pitched fibre cement slate roof has cement-rendered chimneys at each gable and boxed eaves supporting half-round plastic rainwater goods.
The rear elevation is abutted to the left of centre by the earlier original building, which is slightly lower. A later return rises to eaves level of the main block at the right bay. The rear block and return have pitched artificial slate roofs and harled walls with cement-rendered quoins. All openings in these sections are uPVC top-hung casements. The original block has a chimney to its centre and a blank south gable.
The west elevation has three ground floor windows: smaller examples at either end and a larger central opening. The first floor has windows to left and centre, aligned slightly to the right of those beneath. The east elevation, partially abutted by the return, has a modern timber door to the left of the exposed section. The return's east elevation contains a ground floor door to the left and window to the right, with two small windows above. The right gable has timber top-hung casements to the right side at each floor and one to either side at attic level.
The building is documented on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map and subsequent editions. The 1835 first Valuation notes it belonged to Thomas Bailey and measured 44 feet by 28 feet by 22 feet, with a cellar (18 feet by 17 feet by 6 feet) and kitchen (34 feet by 21 feet 6 inches by 10 feet 6 inches). It carried a high valuation of £17 17s 0d. The 1860 Valuation book records that it was "decayed and becoming dilapidated; not habitable at present. Not occupied for many years and not fit for occupation at present", giving building dimensions as 43 feet 6 inches by 28 feet 6 inches, two storeys, with a return (15 feet by 9 feet, two storeys) and wing (42 feet by 21 feet, two storeys). The rear and front sections are probably of early and later 19th century dates respectively.
