Description
This is a semi-elliptical single-span bridge, likely constructed between 1840 and 1859, carrying an accommodation track over the former single-track railway line that ran between Clones and Newtownbutler. The bridge is built of random rubble limestone, with rock-faced voussoirs (including tooled edges to the span) and a similarly detailed string course through the arch at spring level, which also wraps around the abutment quoins. The parapets terminate in piers that project beyond the outer faces, and the parapets step upwards from south to north, following the rise of the road. The approach walls are slightly battered and have tooled edging. The cutting through which the bridge spanned has been largely infilled, but the original level remains visible to the east and west.
The bridge is located on the line between Clones and Lisbellaw, which opened in 1858 and was likely built under the supervision of Sir John Macneill, engineer to the Dundalk & Enniskillen Railway Co. This railway company later became the Irish North Western Railway in 1862, and then amalgamated with the Ulster and Northern Railways to form the Great Northern Railway in 1876 before the line closed in 1957. The bridge remains a significant feature just off the Lisnaskea to Clones road and represents an historical link to the former railway. It is considered to be of both local historical interest and industrial archaeological interest, notable for its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, structural system, and setting.
