Description
This is a railway bridge dating from between 1840 and 1859, located near Newtownbutler in County Fermanagh. It originally carried the embanked former railway line between Clones and Newtownbutler over a one-and-a-half lane road. Only the abutments and approach walls remain, as the bridge span itself was removed above arch spring level.
The abutments are constructed of randomly laid dressed sandstone blocks with tooled edging, and feature stepped, rock-faced quoins. A finely dressed chamfered arch spring course runs along the top of each abutment. The wing walls splay backwards and are built of random rubble with dressed sandstone copings, sloping down to terminate in square piers topped with dressed pyramidal caps.
The bridge formed part of the line between Clones and Lisbellaw, which opened in 1858. It was likely built under the supervision of Sir John Macneill, the engineer for the Dundalk & Enniskillen Railway Company. This company later became the Irish North Western Railway in 1862, which amalgamated with the Ulster and Northern Railways to form the Great Northern Railway in 1876. The railway line closed in 1957. The structure is of industrial archaeological interest.
