Description
The bridge at Leitrim, near Newtownbutler, carries a single-lane road over a stream using a segmental arch. It is constructed from randomly laid sandstone blocks with dressed voussoirs and rusticated parapet copings on three faces. A pipe now runs across the downstream (south) face of the bridge, and both sides are heavily overgrown with vegetation.
The bridge appears on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map and is labelled 'Feugh Br' on subsequent editions from 1857. Based on its style, it is likely a mid-19th century rebuild of an earlier structure, or possibly dates from between 1820 and 1840. A small culvert, originally consisting of a lintel through which a drain discharged into the stream on the downstream left bank, has been replaced with a concrete pipe.
The site is of industrial archaeological interest. The bridge is owned by the central government.
