Description
This is a two-storey farmhouse retaining much of its original character and features, dating from approximately 1900 to 1919. The house sits to the southeast of Knockmackegan townland and is aligned east-west. It has a pitched natural slate roof with two brick chimneys, one between each bay, and half-round cast-iron rainwater goods. The walls are finished with a wet-dash rendering.
The principal southern elevation has a centrally positioned, cement-rendered porch with a flat roof and a timber door with sidelights and a transom window above. To either side of the porch are ground-floor 2/2 sliding sash windows with horns and painted stone sills. The first floor mirrors the ground floor with three similar windows, though slightly reduced in height. The left gable is blank.
The rear elevation abuts the centre and left bays with a two-storey return section, flush with the east gable of the main block. The exposed right bay of the return has 2/2 sliding sash windows on each floor. This return section shares similar detailing with the main block, including plain timber bargeboards and a chimney positioned to the left of centre, perpendicular to the ridge. A gabled porch, with a pitched slate roof, a timber door on the south face, and a top-hung timber casement window on the east face, is attached to the right end of the return. The north gable of the return is abutted by a single-storey outbuilding. The west face of the return has windows on each floor: a 2/2 sliding sash window on the ground floor and a metal-framed casement window on the first floor. This face is further abutted by a small, single-storey addition which is not of particular interest. The outbuilding abutting the north gable of the return may have been an earlier building. It has a pitched corrugated-metal roof. The east elevation of the outbuilding features a glazed timber door, 6/3 and 6/6 sliding sash windows (both with exposed boxes), a large corrugated-metal door, a tongue-and-groove sheeted door, and a small window opening. The right gable of the main block also has 2/2 sliding sash windows on each floor.
The house first appears on the 1857 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. Its valuation in the 1862 Valuation Book was £1.10s.0d and remained unchanged thereafter. This valuation is considered low for the present two-storey building; it may pertain to the return section instead. The front section may be from the early 20th century, but this cannot be confirmed.
