121 Windyhill Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 OQY

This is a simple picturesque vernacular building, well-maintained and contributing character to Windyhill Road. It dates to approximately 1820 to 1839 and is situated at a slight angle to, and below, Windyhill Road, aligning with the slope of the hill and facing north west. Originally a thatched cottage, it now has a metal roof.

The house is a three-room direct entry plan with a store on the south west gable, as indicated on an Ordnance Survey map from 1831. The upper north east gable is surmounted by a chimney and sits above the metal roofline. Other chimneys are unequally spaced along the ridge, while the south west gable, which has no chimney, has a roof overhang over the concrete blockwork. The front door is off-centre and protected by a flat-roofed glass porch. There are two windows to the north east, serving the kitchen and an upper room, and two windows to the south west, one to the lower room, and another to a store accessed by a sheeted door.

At the rear, two lean-to extensions have been added, one at the north east end below the level of the metal roof. The second, at the south west end, rises 600mm higher, intersects the roof, but has a lower portion similar to the first. A low, whitewashed stone retaining wall runs along the road frontage. To the south west is the painted wall of a recently demolished outhouse; to the east, a new replacement storey and a half house with dormers, is under construction, positioned perpendicular to the road. Windows to the front are casement, while those to the rear are metal framed sash windows. A window to the front of the house may have been enlarged in the past. The alterations at the rear, while adding space, are considered to detract slightly from the original appearance but are in a standard vernacular style.
