Description
The Derramore Presbyterian Church is a small, simple, neo-gothic hall church constructed between 1880 and 1899. It is situated on Bolea Road, Limavady, and stands close to the road, elevated above it and separated by a low rendered wall, with a graveyard to one side. A lecture hall is located behind the church.
The church is four bays long, with a porch in the entrance gable which faces the road. The bays are defined by pronounced smooth rendered buttresses with steeply weathered tops rising three-quarters up the walls, two at each quoin. The porch is similarly treated. The pitched gabled roof is covered with natural Bangor blue slates and painted barge stones. The walls are rendered with white roughcast, featuring a smooth plinth matching the buttresses and defining the floor level. Each bay contains a pair of pointed windows trimmed with a narrow band of smooth render. Minimalist corbels support the gutters, and the gable apexes are crowned with a small orb. A small side return provides access to a minister’s room.
The church's interior is described as straightforward and characteristic of neo-gothic design. Originally, the church was heated by two stoves positioned under each aisle, with warm air rising through floor grills. Later, an electric heating system was installed, which was subsequently replaced with a new system in 1988.
The site has a long history; the original church, built circa 1825, was located on the opposite side of the road, where the car park now stands. This earlier building was described as a plain rectangular structure measuring 60 feet by 24 feet. The current church replaced the original and was opened on 19 July 1896, during the ministry of Dr Orr. Subsequent developments included the rebuilding of the manse (HB02/11/027), the provision of a school, lecture hall, and stables. An older covenanting church in Derrybeg was sold in 1882 and repurposed as a farm building by the Caskie family.
