Walled Garden, Drenagh Estate, 17 Dowland Road, Fruithill, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 0HP

This is a mid-18th century walled garden, part of the Drenagh Estate, retained in its entirety and still in use. The garden is enclosed by a 3.600-metre high wall, constructed of rubble sandstone on the south-west and north-west sides, and red brick elsewhere. Numerous round-headed openings provide access. The enclosed area measures 1.14 hectares. The north-west wall contains the remains of former glasshouses. The garden is primarily used for vegetable production, with some fruit trees, including pleached examples, and several large polythene-covered enclosures.

A similar-sized walled garden in a comparable location is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1831. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs describe the garden as containing excellent fruit trees and being well sheltered by high walls and surrounding planting. The walls likely date from circa 1796, indicating the garden was considerably expanded in size early on.
