Drummond Bridge, Broad Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry

A large bridge dating from around 1790, though possibly earlier, is a late Georgian structure situated on Broad Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry. The stone bridge features two arches, each approximately 5 metres wide, constructed with rough stone voussoirs and a projecting central cutwater. The original parapets were unfortunately destroyed and rebuilt in a similar stone, but with different coursing. The width of the carriageway has been increased to the downstream side, where the new parapet is incorporated into a realigned Drenagh Estate wall. Four circular pillars are located at each end of the new parapet, seemingly intended to replicate original detailing. A drain pipe runs along the exterior of the upstream (south) parapet.

The bridge is shown on an 1831 map and was recorded in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs as having two arches, each 14 feet wide, with walls 3 feet high, and extended to Mr McCausland’s gate. Its overall width at the top was recorded as 33 feet. A second, smaller bridge was also documented nearby, with arches 14 feet wide and walls 18 inches high. Alterations and demolitions took place during the realignment of Broad Road from Limavady (Crossnadonnell) during the late 1980s. The bridge possesses industrial archaeological interest.
