Moon Garden, Drenagh Estate, 17 Dowland Road, Fruithill, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 0HP

The Moon Garden is a garden gazebo constructed between 1960 and 1979, exhibiting characteristics reminiscent of the work of Edwin Lutyens. It is situated on the Drenagh Estate, approximately halfway between the southern corner of the walled garden and the site of the original Fruithill House. The garden itself is a rectangular enclosure measuring 16 by 8 metres, built on sloping ground and enclosed by a stone wall with brick detailing and brick coping. Entry is through round-headed doorways in the side walls.

A raised sitting area, accessible by five steps, is sheltered by two square pavilions with pagoda-like tiled roofs, supported by the surrounding walls and a free-standing brick pier. The back wall of this area features two tiers of small recesses, originally intended to hold ceramics. At the lower end, a large, perfectly circular opening trimmed with brick serves as a viewing aperture. The intended subject of this viewer is unclear, although it may relate to the rising moon in autumn or perhaps the ruins of Drumachose old church. The garden features broad stone steps leading from the top to the bottom, with stone paving between each. Planting is minimal.

The garden was designed and built in 1968 by Frances Rhodes of Somerset, who resided in one of the estate houses during the construction period. It occupies the footprint of a former dovecote, marked on a map from 1830.
