Description

Appletree House is a late Victorian, two-story, three-bay stone-built house located at 31 Drumsurn Road, Limavady, County Londonderry. The house likely dates from the 1880s and is set back from the road, featuring a pedestrian gate and pathway leading directly to the entrance, with gardens on either side. The front elevation retains the original character and exhibits good proportions. The natural slate roof has gables, each with a chimney. The entrance door features a plain elliptical fanlight, while the ground floor windows are sliding sash windows, with twelve panes per sash, the centre panes slightly wider than the first-floor windows, which have nine panes and are of reduced height. Above the entrance door is a narrower pointed window, its cill raised to form a pediment accommodated by the roof and a decorated barge board. The pink sandstone is partially ashlar and rubble, with carefully cut stones over window and door heads. Sandstone cills are present. Gable walls have overhanging barges, and the rear wall is similarly treated, although the openings are brick trimmed with recent insertions and fitted with modern timber windows. Two conservatories have been erected in the angles of the smooth-rendered back return, one acting as a porch to the rear door. Behind the house stands a fine, pink sandstone-built, low barn with a slated roof and a length similar to the house; it includes a date stone reading 1888. The house was renovated in 1988 with a grant from the Environment and Heritage Service. While not illustrated on the 1860 Ordnance Survey Sheet, it appears on the 1900 sheet.
