Description

The Castle Bridge, situated on Dowland Road in Fruithill, Limavady, is a two-arch segmental bridge likely dating to around 1790 or earlier. Its construction is possibly linked to an even earlier road. The bridge is of interest due to its connection with Drenagh Demesne and its historical significance.

The exterior of the bridge is constructed with cut stone voussoirs, while the interior of the walls are of rough stone. The bridge spans approximately 4½ metres, the arches narrowing slightly from the upstream to the downstream end. The plinth course is similar to that of Artikelly Bridge. The downstream parapet is finished with humped-back stone, while the upstream parapet features vertical flat stones built over a rough ashlar wall. The parapet wall is 34 metres long on the downstream (northwest) side; a similar length is discernible on the opposite side, now incorporated into the boundary wall of the Drenagh Estate. The parapet is 800mm high, with the Drenagh wall standing 800mm higher.

According to the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, the bridge was named "Castle Bridge" due to its proximity to the ruins of an O’Cahan stronghold in the Killane townland, of which no traces remain now. The bridge is shown on the 1831 Ordnance Survey Map and was described as having two arches, each 15 feet in span, with a roadway 22 feet wide. The famine of 1847 saw the construction of the Drenagh demesne wall, which was built over the bridge. Very few alterations have been made to the structure since. The bridge is notable for its industrial archaeological interest.
