Artikelly Bridge, Dowland Road, Artikelly, Limavady, Co Londonderry

A late 18th-century, early 1780s to 1790s, bridge of random rubble stone is prominently situated on a bend of Dowland Road, crossing the Curly River at Artikelly. The bridge takes the form of two arches in a humped, rustic style. The carriageway is 5½ metres wide between the parapets. The segmental arches, each with an approximate 5½-metre span, rise from a plinth course that sits one metre above the concrete riverbed. This plinth projects 150mm from the springing point and would have supported temporary construction formwork. Cutwaters are present on the central pier, both upstream and downstream. There are two drain holes through the parapet on each side of the carriageway. The voussoirs of the arches are made of uncut rubble stone. The average height of the parapet is 800mm. A laminated timber pedestrian bridge, with a steel walkway and balustrade, is fixed to the downstream side of the main bridge. Basalt-clad retaining walls support the springing on each bank.

The bridge is recorded in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs as having two arches of 18 feet span, with an 18-foot wide roadway. The absence of a construction date suggests it was built before the Memoirs were compiled, likely before 1790. Its alignment with Streeve House, built circa 1735, suggests a possible, albeit unconfirmed, link and potentially an even earlier date. A footbridge was noted in a 1970 listing survey. The site possesses some degree of industrial archaeological interest.
