Bridge over railway, Largy Road, Crumlin, Co Antrim

This is an early Victorian bridge constructed of stone and brick, built to carry the main road from Langford Lodge to Belfast over the Dublin and Antrim Junction Railway, which was a branch line of the Great Northern Railway. The bridge’s construction date is uncertain, but it is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1858. The bridge is a single arched masonry skew bridge with a segmental archway formed from basalt rubble and shaped rock-faced voussoirs, which have tooled arrises. The bridge features battered faces to its abutments, projecting forward from the spandrels, and a diagonal brickwork vault. The parapet is finished with roughly shaped sandstone blocks, and the carriageway is hump-backed. The bridge is situated in a rural area, bordered by dense tree growth and hedges that run up to the parapet ends. While it represents an example of early Victorian bridge engineering and holds industrial archaeological interest, it is otherwise considered to be of unremarkable appearance.
