Bridge over railway at Glendaragh, Crumlin Road, Crumlin, Co Antrim

This is a single-arch masonry bridge constructed between 1840 and 1859, representing early Victorian bridge engineering. Built of basalt rubble, the bridge carries a private lane over a railway line. The segmental archway is formed of brickwork, constructed from four courses of brick headers set in the same plane as the spandrels, with brick vaulting. The parapet copings are of roughly shaped large sandstone blocks with pecked faces. The carriageway is humped. The bridge was built to carry the private driveway from Glendaragh to the main Crumlin to Antrim road, crossing the Dublin and Antrim Junction Railway, a branch line of the Great Northern Railway. It was necessitated by the railway cutting through the land between the house and the road. The bridge is situated in a rural location bordered by dense tree growth on the embankments. While the bridge’s appearance is unspoiled, it is not of any special or unusual architectural interest beyond its demonstration of Victorian engineering, although it possesses industrial archaeological interest.
