Description

This is a steel girder railway viaduct built in 1915 by Alexander Findlay & Co Ltd of Motherwell, Scotland, to carry the Antrim to Knockmore branch line of the Great Northern Railway. It crosses the main road and the Crumlin River at an angle, forming a prominent landmark on the approach to the village.

The viaduct consists of two main steel lattice trusses carried on longitudinal girders, with ten cross girders and six segmental lattice arches, all painted light grey. The structure is supported by stone abutments constructed of snecked basalt rubble with squared corners to the quoins. The abutments feature battered side walls projecting forward to create rectangular piers, with vertical inner faces and shaped iron tie bars on the northern side of the river. Roughly shaped basalt blocking courses are present on the abutment piers, along with raking copings to the angled walls at the rear of each pier. Small metal plaques, one oval and one rectangular, are affixed to the western truss, inscribed with "Alexr. Findlay & Co Ltd. Bridge Builders. Motherwell 1915."

The current masonry abutments date back to the original construction of the railway line by the Dublin and Antrim Junction Railway, as shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1858 and apparently replaced an earlier railway bridge or viaduct. The viaduct is situated on the northern edge of the village, surrounded by trees and bushes. It oversails the old stone bridge carrying the main road over the Crumlin River, and a slip road leading to a country park. The structure is of industrial archaeological interest and is considered a comparatively rare example of an open-lattice steel girder railway bridge.
