3 Mill Road, Crumlin, Co Antrim, BT29 4XL

This is an early Victorian building, likely constructed between 1840 and 1859, originally a house and now a shop. It stands in the village of Crumlin, facing directly onto the main street. The building is two storeys high with a gabled roughcast exterior, five windows wide on the first floor. The roof is covered in regular courses of Bangor blue slates. The first-floor windows are rectangular timber sliding sash windows, vertically hung with a 1 over 1 configuration, and feature horns. The lower sash of the second window from the left has six panes. All windows are set within heavy, square moulded surrounds with decorated keystones. The central ground-floor entrance is accessed via a modern rectangular glazed and panelled door, replacing a previous flush timber door that had a plain fanlight, set within a panelled pilaster surround rising to a consoled cornice hood. Modern, large, three-light hardwood shop windows flank the doorway on each side, replacing earlier windows that were sashed as on the first floor and in similar surrounds. The north gable is blank and roughcast rendered. A long, modern, single-storey extension has been added to the rear. The building is situated in the build-up area of the village, adjacent to a taller gabled two-storey house to the south and flanked by a featureless open yard to the north. The building first appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1858. Both the exterior and interior have undergone inappropriate alterations.
