Description
This is an early 19th-century building, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, that has undergone several inappropriate alterations. It appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832-3. Originally a house, it is now used as an office.
The two-storey, three-bay building is faced with smooth cement rendering and painted. A chimney stack is present on each gable. The main entrance faces north and is located within a central, two-storey projecting porch. The porch was originally flat-roofed but has since been gabled. The entrance features a moulded elliptical arch framed by slim Ionic columns, which have been altered near their bases with square replacements. A plain elliptical fanlight sits above the entrance, and a panelled timber door, which appears new, provides access. Above the entrance is a small-paned fixed window, a modern replacement for what was originally a three-light timber sash window, set within a Tudor label moulding. The lower windows on the sides of the porch are semi-circular headed sliding sashes with a 2 over 2 pane configuration, lacking horns. The upper windows are four-pane fixed lights with label mouldings. Rectangular timber windows are located on each floor in the entrance front, to either side of the porch. The window to the right is original, featuring three-light vertically hung sliding sashes without horns, with 6 over 6 panes in the centre and 2 over 2 panes on the sides. The window on the left is a modern replacement, similar to those on the first floor of the porch, all set in square moulded openings. The windows on the east gable and rear elevation are modern replacements and do not match the original pattern.
The building occupies a corner site on Main Street in Crumlin, with the front entrance opening onto the pavement. The side bays are set back, and original iron railings enclose the small area on either side of the porch. A lower, gabled, two-storey house abuts the west gable. This house has a flush wall plane and rusticated quoins on the right-hand side, with window surrounds similar to those on the main building, suggesting an original association, although it is now a separate property.
The building was operated as a Credit Union from 1989. Photographic evidence from 1892, and the Ordnance Survey map from 1832-3, illustrate the building's early appearance.
