Crumlin Memorial Orange Hall, Main Street, Crumlin, Co Antrim

The Crumlin Memorial Orange Hall, built in 1927-8, is an example of an inter-war Orange Hall designed by the Ulster architect R.H. Gibson. The foundation stone was laid by Viscount Craigavon on 18th April 1927, and the hall was officially opened on 9th April 1928. It is a single-storey, gabled building with a gabled and hipped front porch. The main entrance faces north. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses. Buttresses are present on the side elevations, and the segmental arched windows have painted smooth cement surrounds with keystones. The windows themselves are original three-light timber fixed lights with small-paned top vents, protected by wire mesh grilles. A prominent feature is the projecting entrance bay, which includes four fluted pilasters and a half-timbered gablet. A modern panelled front door has replaced the original glazed and panelled door. The hall stands within its own grounds, set back from the main street in the village. It has a lawn to either side and original wrought iron gates and railings of a scrolling design, though these are now in poor condition. The building suffered damage from a malicious fire in 1996 which led to extensive refurbishment of the rear rooms and the insertion of a suspended ceiling in the main hall.
