Description
25 Mill Road is an Edwardian two-storey, three-bay house built in 1909 to the designs of Belfast architect J. St J. Phillips, originally as a teacher’s residence alongside a national school (listed separately as HB20/15/025A). The house was constructed by Messrs Law Bros of Lisburn and completed by August 1909.
The house is built of red brick with black and white half-timbered panels. The main entrance faces west. The roofs are covered in courses of Bangor blue slates with terracotta ridge tiles and finials to the gables, and red brick chimneys. It features rectangular timber windows with small panes; modern replacements have been fitted for the original double-hung sashes, although the lower fixed light with top-hung upper light remains. A flat canopy over the porch is supported by shaped wooden brackets, and the front door is a modern replacement in timber with small panes.
The house sits within the built-up area of the village, set back from the road on a slightly elevated site within its own garden. Red brick front boundary walls include an original wrought iron pedestrian gate to a path leading up steps to the entrance. Immediately to the north is the former national school.
Original documentation, including a specification dated 28 January 1909, is held in the Ministry of Finance file no Co Antrim D: 79 at the MBR, Hill Street, Belfast. Further details were published in the Irish Builder and Engineer on 21 August 1909. While originally designed by a prominent Ulster architect, the house has lost some original features and is considered to be of limited architectural interest.
