Description

A lychgate of timber construction, aligned on north-south axis. Plinth walls comprise three regular courses of rough faced squared granite with a coping of smooth dressed granite. Superstructure carried on plinth walls comprises timber framed superstructure of robust construction with square corner posts, on base rails and shaped brackets. Side panels blank to outer faces but with inner faces inscribed with names of those from the area killed in 1st and 2nd World Wars, inset on inner faces in cusped Gothic-panelled heads. Looking south, plaque on left is inscribed "The People of Crumlin and Gartree in affectionate remembrance of the men and women who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-1919;" and the plaque to the right is inscribed "The People of Crumlin and Gartree to those from the district who voluntarily gave their services in the defence of their country 1914-1919." Timber roof with tongued and grooved sheeting to underside; preformed plastic roof covering on top to give appearance of red tiled roof. Ogee Gothic arched timber spandrel panels to front and rear of gateway, surmounted by angle headed collar inscribed 'War Memorial Park' to outer faces, surmounted by a timber-work cross in the open gable above; diagonal cross bracing between crosses. Plinth walls have iron mounts for gate but gate missing. SETTING: The gateway stands at the entrance to a park, set well back from the main road. It is approached by a broad tarmac avenue, lined with hedges. Area around gateway paved, with paved path through it leading between later low boundary walls to a modern community centre.
