Description
This timber lychgate serves as a war memorial, likely constructed around 1920, although the precise date is unknown. It is located at the entrance to War Memorial Park on Main Street, Crumlin, County Antrim. The memorial’s original setting has been significantly altered. Built as a First World War memorial, it commemorates those from the area who died in both the First and Second World Wars.
The lychgate is aligned on a north-south axis and comprises granite plinth walls made of three courses of rough-faced squared granite, topped with a coping of smooth dressed granite. The superstructure is a robust timber frame with square corner posts, base rails, and shaped brackets. The side panels are blank externally but inscribed internally with the names of the fallen, set within cusped Gothic-panelled heads. Two plaques are located on the south face, the one on the left reading “The People of Crumlin and Gartree in affectionate remembrance of the men and women who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-1919,” and the one on the right reading “The People of Crumlin and Gartree to those from the district who voluntarily gave their services in the defence of their country 1914-1919.” The roof is constructed of tongued and grooved timber sheeting underneath a modern plastic covering designed to resemble red tiles. Ogee Gothic arched timber spandrel panels are present at the front and rear of the gateway, with an inscribed timber collar reading "War Memorial Park" above, surmounted by a timber-work cross in an open gable. Diagonal cross bracing is visible between timbers. The plinth walls have iron mounts, but the gate itself is missing. The memorial stands within a park, set back from the main road and approached by a tarmac avenue lined with hedges. The area surrounding the gateway is paved, with a paved path leading between later low boundary walls to a modern community centre.
