Description

Free-standing limestone Celtic Cross War Memorial, erected in 1922 on Main Street in Hillsborough. This distinctive war memorial stands approximately 4 metres (15 feet) tall and is carved with Celtic knotwork and cable mouldings in the Celtic-Revival style. It rises from a tapered base set upon a stepped limestone platform.

The memorial was constructed from Irish limestone and funded by public subscription from the local community. The unveiling ceremony took place on 13 May 1922, with the monument unveiled by the 7th Marquis of Downshire. The ceremony included an address by Colonel W. H. Savage, Commanding Officer of the 13th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, and a dedicatory prayer by the Right Rev. C. T. P. Grierson, Lord Bishop of Down and Connor, followed by 'The Last Post' sounded by buglers of the 1st Norfolk Regiment. The Hillsborough Castle Guard, dressed in traditional 17th-century uniform, flanked the ceremony.

The west-facing panel bears an inscription honouring those from the district who lost their lives in the First World War (1914-1919), followed by 72 names of the fallen, the majority of whom served with the Royal Irish Rifles or the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The inscription reads: "In honour of those from this district who lost their lives fighting for King and Country in the Great War. This Cross is erected by their friends and neighbours in gratitude for their loyalty and devotion."

After the Second World War, an additional panel was added to the east side of the memorial, commemorating 12 men killed on active service during that conflict (1939-1945).

The memorial stands in a prominent position on a paved area in front of the gate screen to St. Malachy's Church on the east side of Main Street, with which it has group value. It is situated within Hillsborough's conservation area and is of considerable historical and social importance to the local community.
